Stratum is a hand-held device and integrated platform for point-of-care wound analysis that enables objective, preventative, and personalized care.
My Role: Technical lead on flexible smart bandage development & testing, technical prototyping & testing, user research, marketing, scientific research, pitch deck formation, pitching, project presentation, analysis of hand-held scanner efficacy via porcine wound model, video editing, video script writing
Project Development: Stratum prototypes achieved promising preliminary results under laboratory conditions.
Awards: Stratum was selected for the Royal College of Art Patent Support Programme.

Project Details
The proposed Stratum System included a hand-held wound imager (left), accompanying app (middle), and a flexible smart bandage for remote wound monitoring.
The proposed system would use AI, the smart bandage, and multispectral imaging to analyze the listed factors, which could be used to predict wound infection risk. Factors highlighted in light blue obtained promising early results for measurement under laboratory conditions, while dark blue items were factors for future development.
The flexible smart bandage was battery free, disposable, and fully flexible. Testing demonstrated its ability to successfully detect wound pH, a critical factor for infection risk.
The team achieved promising preliminary results using a porcine wound model, which was able to differentiate between modeled undamaged skin, as well as 'healthy' and 'necrotic' wound tissue.
Porcine testing also demonstrated the handheld device's capability to detect damaged tissue under closed skin.
Lastly, the handheld device was able to read skin surface temperature, a key metric for infection risk.
The proposed accompanying digital platform was designed to include all information needed for healthcare professionals, patients, and caretakers to manage the wound remotely.
The team conducted user research interviews with healthcare professionals, which were used to create these user profiles.
Project Status: The team ultimately decided not to carry forward the Stratum project.
